What is a board foot?
A board foot is a unit of measurement for calculating the volume of wood typically used in North America. A board foot presents a volume of wood that is 1 foot long, 1 foot wide, and 1 inch thick and is equal to 144 cubic inches or 1/12 cubic feet.

How to calculate board feet?
To calculate the board feet of lumber, you multiple the thickness of the board in inches, times the width of the board in inches, times the length of the board in either inches or feet. If the length of the board is in inches then the total is divided by 144 and if the board length is in feet, then the total is divided by 12.
Board Foot = Thickness (in.) x Width (in.) x Length (in.) / 144
Board Foot = Thickness (in.) x Width (in.) x Length (ft.) / 12
Example: 1 in. x 6 in. x 48 in. / 144 = 2 board feet
Example: 1 in. x 6 in. x 4 ft. / 12 = 2 board feet
